I initially thought that setting a standard PG-13 guideline would be a helpful guide to what I feel comfortable with seeing on this board. However, I've made the mistake of assuming that we all speak the same way, which was rather silly of me. For example, words like crap are used in my church environment, while others consider it something not to be used at all. In New Zealand, spunky is considered an absolutely terrible word... if we had someone here from NZ, we'd have to just not use that word out of respect for that person's culture.
So, to make it easier on everyone, here's the basic guidelines:
If it would be deleted off the radio, then please do not post it. This includes:
F....
Sh.....
And I am adding b---, because it is such a derogatory word towards females... I mean, seriously, you're calling someone a dog. Just... no.
And if you must have language, please limit its usage. Limit usage of d----, p----ed, and a--. Whore, slut, and skank are all insulting but sometimes unfortunately they are the only way to describe someone... use them only when necessary.
Re: ba-----d.... I have to be honest, I was first introduced to this term in regards to the Tudors, so I honestly thought for years that it was an okay word to use to refer to someone born out of wedlock.... boy, was I wrong!! So, I apologize for having set a poor example.... I've figured out recently that it's not such a great thing to say (naive? yeah.... I am) and so it's another word I ask that we all use sparingly.
You are more than welcome to use use such phrases as crud, snap, freak, shoot, shut up, screw (in most cases... if you're talking about literally screwing someone, then I am really not comfortable with that... it's rather vulgar. Find better ways to say that.), crap, dang, darn.... UNLESS you do not feel comfortable with one or multiple of these expressions. And that is fine.
Under absolutely no circumstances is anyone allowed to refer to anyone or anything as the N word. I don't care if you're citing Mark Twain, I don't like it. Just, please, out of respect for the black community, don't use it. The same rule goes for all other racial slurs.
Now, the reasons that I make some guidelines for language usage.... One, it has never been a part of my verbal discourse and is therefore something I am personally not comfortable with. Two, it just doesn't sound good. I'm sorry, it just doesn't. Three, Profanity is a very uncreative cop-out to saying what you are trying to get across. It sounds as though one does no put thought into what one is saying/writing, that one does not care, and that one has a limited vocabulary. It adds to your writing and speaking prowess to be able to express oneself in ways not so common and crude. However, I do understand that you can't very well have your bad guy kill someone and say, "gee golly, that was fun!" unless he's mocking them. So, bottom line:
This forum is PG-13 in action and in language. Use moderation.
I hope this is okay, and I apologize profusely if I have offended anyone or made anyone uncomfortable.
